Florida Keys Fishing in the Winter

Dec. 18th- Lots of torpedo size barracudas and big sharks on the flats right now. People often underestimate the excitement of catching barracudas on the flats- but with their explosive strikes, long runs, and acrobatic jumps, it is quite thrilling.

Although the water temps are a little cool (69-70), we did see one nice permit tailing across the flat.

Dec. 19th- Went out prospecting and fishing with another local guide. Once again multiple shots at big barracudas and sharks. Caught a few nice barracudas. With the water temps still a little on the cool side we decided to go look for redfish on the flats. Spotted multiple redfish up in the shallows- had a couple good shots but weren't able to hook up.

Dec. 20th- My wife and I decided to head up to the Everglades for a fishing adventure. We launched the boat in Marathon and headed over to Flamingo. Couldn't ask for better conditions- calm seas and air temperatures in the mid 70's. The first flat we checked out was loaded with mature size tarpon in 2-3 feet of water. I really was not expecting to see such big fish so unfortunately we were outmatched with our light rods and tackle. This won't happen again!

My wife had us sightseeing and bird watching most of the day- saw white pelicans and rosy spoonbills; explored mangrove creeks and caught a few jack crevalles.
